About Chicago Night Tours

Chicago after dark has no gate and no ticket of its own. The Riverwalk is free and open until 11pm, and the skyline is best seen from the water, where the river runs between the towers and the lock opens onto Lake Michigan. What changes through the year is the light: sunset moves from 4:19pm in early December to 8:30pm in late June. Join us on the cruises, the crime bus and the flight that show the city at night. We set out on every card where it goes and whether it runs in the dark.

The Lit Landmarks

Buckingham Fountain runs its light, music and water show from dusk to 11pm, spring through the end of fall. Art on theMART plays across the Merchandise Mart's river front Thursday to Sunday, and 360 Chicago stays open until 11pm, with last entry at 10pm. From the river you pass the Wrigley Building and Marina City, and from the lake the whole skyline is lit.

Getting to the Docks

The cruises leave from two docks a block apart on opposite banks of the river at Michigan Avenue: the stairs down at Michigan & Wacker on the south bank, and 400 N Michigan by the Wrigley Building on the north. Arrive 30 minutes early, since boarding starts about 15 minutes before the boat leaves. The crime bus meets outside 163 E. Pearson St.

When It Gets Dark

Sunset comes at 4:19pm in early December and 8:30pm in late June, with full dark about half an hour later. The 7:30pm crime bus sets off in daylight in June and after sunset from September to early April. The average low is about 68°F in July and 46°F in October, so pack a jacket for the water.

Hours

The Riverwalk is open from 6am to 11pm every day, and there is no fee. Each tour's start time is shown when you book.

Getting there

The By Night cruise boards down the stairs at the northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. Every other start is on the Chicago Night tour meeting points map.
